The Challenge
Shirley, a Ballina senior, reached out to Sistability because she needed a little help around the house. Regular things like keeping on top of the cleaning were getting harder, and she wanted reliable support from people she could trust. She lived with her son Steve, with her other son Rob just next door, but both of them were getting older too, and managing on their own was becoming a challenge for all three of them.
It sounds simple when you put it like that. But for many older Australians, making that call is anything but simple.
Most people who reach out to Sistability have been thinking about it for a while. They're proud, capable people who have spent a lifetime doing things themselves. Asking for help can feel like admitting defeat, like something is being lost rather than gained. So they wait. They manage. They quietly do less, or ask their families to quietly do more.
Shirley didn't let it get that far. She was honest with herself about what she needed, and she did something about it. That decision, as straightforward as it might seem from the outside, was the beginning of something that would benefit her whole family.
The Solution
Step 1: Starting with a regular clean
The first thing Sistability provided for Shirley was straightforward: ongoing domestic cleaning. A dependable team showing up regularly, taking care of the home she shared with Steve, and doing it with the care and respect that matters when you're letting someone into your space. Her home, her standards, her way.
For Shirley, having that support in place wasn't a sign that things were falling apart. It was the opposite. A practical, responsible decision that meant she could keep living well in her own home without quietly struggling.
Trust grew visit by visit. And over time, so did the relationship.
Step 2: Identifying that more was needed
As time went on, it became clear that cleaning alone wasn't the full picture anymore. Shirley was on a Support at Home package, but the funding level she'd been assessed at wasn't keeping pace with what she actually needed. The garden needed regular attention. There were days when broader support would have made a real difference to her comfort and independence.
That's when Jenn, Sistability's Aged Care Manager, stepped in properly.
"The first thing I wanted to do was make sure Shirley was properly assessed, that her funding actually reflected her real needs," Jenn says. "It's such a common situation. People receive an initial assessment, life moves on, needs increase, but nobody has gone back to advocate for a review."
Step 3: Advocating for a package upgrade
Jenn worked through the assessments with Shirley carefully, making sure her situation was fully and accurately represented. She pushed for a package upgrade, advocating for a higher level of funding that Shirley's circumstances genuinely warranted. And she got it.
Sistability then took on the management of Shirley's entire Support at Home package, building a proper care plan, coordinating services, and making sure everything worked together. Regular cleaning continued. Gardening support was added. Support services were put in place that gave Shirley more comfort and independence in her daily life.
The Outcome
The difference was significant. Shirley had a proper care plan for the first time. Services were coordinated rather than piecemeal. The garden was back under control. And the coordination that had previously fallen on Shirley and her sons had a proper home.
Then something else happened. Watching the difference that proper support made for their mum, Steve and Rob began to wonder whether they might be entitled to the same kind of help.
They were.
Jenn worked with both of them to explore their own aged care entitlements, and before long Steve and Rob each had their own support in place: cleaning, gardening, and the services that made sense for each of them individually.
What had started as Shirley making a practical decision for herself had grown into something none of them had quite anticipated. A whole family, each properly supported, living side by side with the help they needed.
"It's really lovely when it works out this way. Shirley came to us for a clean, and ended up opening the door for her whole family. A lot of people don't realise what they're entitled to. Sometimes it just takes one person to ask."

It Takes Courage to Ask for Help
Shirley came to Sistability thinking she just needed a hand with the cleaning. What she found was that she was entitled to so much more.
That's really the whole point of the Support at Home program. It exists to help older Australians stay living in their own homes for longer, with genuine independence and comfort. When older Australians get the right support at home, everyone benefits. Families worry less. Hospital admissions reduce. People stay healthier, happier, and more connected to their communities for longer.
Asking for help isn't a burden on the system. It's exactly what the system is designed for. But first, you have to be willing to ask.
