Not All Cleans Are Created Equal: Understanding the Different Types of Domestic Cleaning and Which One You Need

When most people think about getting a cleaner, they picture someone coming in to vacuum, mop, and wipe down the surfaces. And sometimes that's exactly what's needed. But domestic cleaning is not a one-size-fits-all service, and understanding the difference between maintenance cleaning, spring cleaning, and specialised cleaning can help you make sure you're getting the right level of support for your situation.

At Sistability, we provide all three types of domestic cleaning across the Northern Rivers. Here's a guide to what each one involves, who it suits, and how to know which is right for you.

Maintenance Cleaning

Maintenance cleaning is what most people think of when they hear the word "cleaner." It's the regular, scheduled service that keeps a home clean, tidy, and safe on an ongoing basis.

A typical maintenance clean covers dusting and wiping down surfaces, vacuuming and mopping floors, cleaning bathrooms and kitchens, emptying bins, and light tidying and organisation. Depending on the size of the home and the frequency of the service, this might take two to four hours per visit.

Maintenance cleaning works best on a weekly or fortnightly schedule. The more regularly it happens, the less time each visit takes and the more consistently comfortable and safe the home feels.

This service is ideal for older Australians who want to maintain their home to their own standards without the physical strain of doing it themselves, for people with disability who need consistent support to keep their living environment safe and comfortable, and for busy households that simply don't have the time to keep on top of everything.

For clients on a Support at Home package or NDIS plan, maintenance cleaning is one of the most commonly funded supports and is a natural starting point for anyone considering in-home help for the first time.

Spring Cleaning

A spring clean goes further than a maintenance clean. It's a thorough, top-to-bottom refresh of the home, designed to address the areas that regular cleaning doesn't reach and to reset the home to a genuinely deep level of cleanliness.

On top of everything included in a maintenance clean, a spring clean covers deep cleaning of kitchen appliances including the oven, fridge, and microwave, intensive bathroom cleaning including tiles, grout, and shower screens, skirting boards, doors, and window sills, decluttering and reorganising key areas, and removing cobwebs and built-up dust from corners, light fittings, and ceiling fans.

Despite the name, a spring clean doesn't have to happen in spring. Many clients schedule one at the start of winter to make sure the home is fresh and comfortable for the cooler months, or after a period of illness, a family visit, or any time the home has fallen behind and needs a proper reset.

For older Australians or people with disability who have regular maintenance cleaning in place, a spring clean every three to six months is a great complement to the ongoing service. For new clients who haven't had professional cleaning support before, a spring clean is often the right place to start before moving to a regular maintenance schedule.

Specialised Cleaning

Specialised cleaning covers a range of situations where a home requires additional care, sensitivity, and expertise beyond what a standard domestic clean can address.

At Sistability, our specialised cleaning services include hoarding and extreme cleaning, filth and squalor clean-ups, post-hospital discharge cleaning, relocation and move-in or move-out cleaning, and transition cleaning.

Each of these situations is different, but they share some common characteristics. The work is typically more intensive than a standard clean. It often involves a higher degree of emotional sensitivity, particularly when the home belongs to a vulnerable person or a family navigating a difficult period. And it requires a team that is trained, non-judgmental, and genuinely committed to restoring the home with dignity and care.

Hoarding and extreme cleaning involves homes where clutter, accumulated possessions, or neglect have reached a level that a standard clean cannot address. This work requires patience, respect, and a clear understanding that the person whose home this is may have a complex relationship with the items being addressed.

Post-hospital discharge cleaning ensures that a person returning home from hospital comes back to a clean, safe, and welcoming environment. This is particularly important when the person has been in hospital for an extended period, when there is an infection risk that requires targeted disinfection, or when the home needs to be reorganised to accommodate new equipment or mobility needs.

Transition cleaning supports people who are moving in or out of a property, whether that's a new tenant moving into a home that needs to be properly prepared, or a family managing the home of a loved one who has moved into residential care or passed away. These are often emotionally significant moments, and the cleaning team's sensitivity matters as much as their skill.

Which Type of Cleaning Do You Need?

Not sure where to start? Here's a simple way to think about it.

If your home is generally manageable but you need regular help to keep it clean and safe, maintenance cleaning is what you need.

If the home needs a thorough reset before moving to a regular schedule, or if you want a seasonal deep clean to complement your regular service, a spring clean is the right choice.

If your situation involves a level of challenge that goes beyond standard domestic cleaning, whether that's a post-hospital discharge, a difficult accumulation of clutter, or a significant life transition, specialised cleaning is what you need.

And if you're not sure, we're always happy to have a conversation, assess your situation, and recommend the right approach.

At Sistability, we work with NDIS participants, aged care clients on Support at Home packages, self-funded clients, veterans, and carers across the Northern Rivers. All of our cleaning services can be tailored to your funding arrangement and your individual needs.
