Understanding hoarding and squalor
Hoarding and squalor are rarely about mess. Behind a hoarded or neglected home is usually a person dealing with something deeper — grief, loss, trauma, a change in health, or not knowing where to start.
They aren't the same thing, either: hoarding is about accumulation and difficulty letting go; squalor is about a home becoming hard to keep clean and cared for. We support people living with both — and we start by understanding the person.
Care first, always.

Our managed clear-out process
When a home needs a full clear-out — often through DCJ or a social housing referral — we manage the whole job end-to-end:
Clear-out crew first
We remove items from the home, typically through skip bins we arrange on behalf of the client or referrer.
Cleaning crews follow
Once cleared, our cleaning teams restore the property.
Completion report at handover
Referrers receive a report with key job details, recommended next steps, and before/after documentation for their records — shared privately, with consent.
Realistic timeframes
Larger jobs run over several days, scaled to the size of the home and the volume to be removed.
Why Support Coordinators refer to Sistability
How to refer a client
Get in touch — call 1300 131 096 or submit a referral online. Let us know the client's situation and any urgency.
We arrange a private, judgement-free assessment — either with you present or directly with the client, whichever they're most comfortable with.
You receive a clear quote and timeframe — with no obligation, before any work begins.
What to have ready when you refer: the client's contact details, a brief description of the situation, and funding type if known (Support at Home, NDIS, DVA, Carers NSW, or self-funded).
Response time: we aim to make contact within one business day.
What you receive back: a completion report at handover, with key job details and before/after documentation where consent has been given — shared privately, for your records.

Common questions
Will you judge me or my family?
Never. We're judgement-free, and dignity always comes first.
Who cleans hoarding and squalor homes in the Northern Rivers?
Sistability provides trauma-informed hoarding and squalor cleaning across the Northern Rivers, including Ballina, Lismore, Byron Bay and surrounding areas. Our teams are worker-screened, insured, and trained to work without judgement.
How much does a hoarding clean-up cost in NSW?
Cost depends on the size of the home and the scope of work, so we don't quote a flat price upfront. Every job starts with a private conversation and an on-site assessment, followed by a clear, transparent quote before any work begins.
Can a support coordinator refer a client for specialist cleaning?
Yes — support coordinators, aged care providers, health teams and housing organisations can all refer a client directly. We work alongside your existing supports, not around them, and provide a completion report once the job is done.
Is hoarding cleaning covered by Support at Home, NDIS or DVA funding?
Yes, in most cases. We work with Support at Home funding, NDIS (specialist hoarding, squalor and deep cleaning), DVA-registered veteran support, Carers NSW referrals, and self-funded arrangements.
How long does a hoarding or squalor clean-up take?
Smaller jobs can often be completed in a day. Larger clear-outs typically run over several days, scaled to the size of the home and the volume of items involved.
Will you take before-and-after photos of my home?
Only with consent, and only for legitimate purposes like referrer reporting or insurance documentation. Photos are never used publicly.
What happens to the items and waste removed?
Items are removed respectfully, typically via skip bins we arrange on the client's or referrer's behalf, in consultation with the household on what's kept, donated or discarded.
