The Disabled Surfers Association: Making Waves of Change

Founded in 1986 by the resilient Gary Blaschke, the Disabled Surfers Association was born out of a personal journey of overcoming adversity. After a motorcycle accident left Gary without a kneecap and undergoing extensive rehabilitation, he recognised the need for an organisation that would support surfers with disabilities, offering them a chance to reconnect with the ocean. Over the years, the association has expanded its reach to welcome individuals with a wide range of disabilities, from asthma to joint injuries and paraplegia.

A Community of Friendship and Support

The Disabled Surfers Association is more than just an organisation; it's a community that provides friendship, support, and the opportunity for individuals to reignite their passion for surfing. What started as a small initiative has grown into a total voluntary organisation that sets world-class standards for disabled surfers. The Far North Coast Branch, which includes Lennox Head, has been a crucial part of this expansion, with its first event held in Byron Bay in 2003. Today, they host five gatherings per season, reaching out to disabled community members from Minnie Waters in the south to Kingscliff in the north.
