Why Autumn is a Great Time to Deep Clean Your Home
Most people think of spring cleaning as the default reset: throw open the windows, clear out the clutter, start fresh. And sure, spring cleaning has its place, but autumn in makes sense for homes in the Northern Rivers. Here's why:
The Northern Rivers summer leaves its mark
In summer, doors and windows are open, the house breathes, and life happens mostly outside. By the time autumn arrives, the evidence of a busy summer is everywhere: salt air residue on windows and flyscreens, cobwebs in corners and around light fittings, outdoor furniture that has taken a beating, and the general build-up that comes from months of heat and humidity.
Autumn is the natural moment to address all of it. The weather is more comfortable to work in, surfaces dry quickly, and it is far easier to clean a home thoroughly before the evenings start closing in.
Mould is easier to deal with now than in July
Autumn in the Northern Rivers is the transition point: the humidity of summer is starting to ease, but the damper, closed-up conditions of winter evenings have not quite arrived yet. In our experience, this is the ideal window to deal with any mould or mildew that has built up over the warmer months.
Mould in bathrooms, laundries, and around window frames is very common after a humid Northern Rivers summer. We also recommend paying close attention to air circulation in rooms that tend to hold dampness, as good airflow now makes a real difference through winter. If mould is left untreated going into the cooler months it can spread quickly, so a thorough clean in autumn saves a much bigger job come September.
Windows and flyscreens deserve attention
Autumn is one of the best times to clean windows properly. After a long summer, particularly following seasons with heavy rain or strong winds off the coast, windows and screens can carry a significant build-up of grime, salt residue, and dust.
Clean windows do more than look good. In the shorter days of winter, getting as much natural light into the home as possible makes a genuine difference to how a space feels. We recommend including windows, tracks, and flyscreens as a priority in any pre-winter deep clean.
Upholstery and soft furnishings need a refresh
Winter in the Northern Rivers tends to mean more evenings on the couch, more time in the living areas, and more use of the spaces that got neglected during a busy outdoor summer. Before nesting season begins, it is worth making sure those spaces are actually clean.
We find that upholstery, rugs, curtains, and soft furnishings hold onto dust, allergens, and odours more than people realise, and once the house is closed up in the evenings, that build-up has nowhere to go. Getting these areas properly cleaned before winter means the home feels genuinely fresh rather than just tidy.
Time to clear out the junk
There is a natural tendency to nest in winter, and a home should feel comfortable and calm going into the cooler months. But nesting in a cluttered environment just means cosying up with the mess.
Autumn is the perfect moment to do a proper clear-out — not just a tidy, but a genuine purge of the things that have accumulated over summer and beyond. The garage, the shed, the spare room, the back corner of the yard. The broken outdoor furniture, the boxes that never got unpacked, the stuff that has been "dealt with later" for six months.
We find that once a skip bin is out the front, people are always surprised by how much actually goes. And once it is gone, the deep clean that follows is so much more effective because it is actually cleaning the home rather than working around years of accumulated stuff.
What a pre-winter deep clean should cover
A proper pre-winter deep clean goes well beyond the weekly vacuum and wipe-down. At Sistability, our deep cleans typically cover cleaning inside and behind appliances, washing windows and flyscreen tracks, scrubbing bathrooms and tile grout, treating any mould or mildew, cobweb removal throughout the home, wiping down walls and skirting boards, and attending to soft furnishings and curtains.
It is the kind of job that is hard to get through in a day, and easy to keep putting off. That is exactly why we recommend booking in autumn, when the weather makes it easy to air the home out properly while the work is being done.
A practical autumn deep clean checklist
Not sure where to start? Here is what we recommend working through before winter arrives.
Windows and doors: Clean windows inside and out, wipe down frames and sills, scrub flyscreen tracks, and remove and rinse flyscreens.
Bathrooms and laundry: Scrub tile grout, treat any mould or mildew, clean exhaust fans, and wipe down walls and surfaces.
Kitchen: Clean inside and behind appliances, degrease the rangehood and filters, wipe down cupboard fronts and interiors, and clear out the pantry.
Living areas: Vacuum and spot clean upholstery, wash cushion covers and throws, dust ceiling fans and light fittings, and remove cobwebs from corners and cornices.
Bedrooms and wardrobes: Wash curtains or wipe down blinds, declutter and pack away summer clothing, and vacuum under beds and furniture.
Outdoor areas: Wipe down outdoor furniture, sweep and hose down entertaining areas, and store or cover items not being used through winter.
General: Wipe down skirting boards and walls, vacuum and mop all floors, and ensure good airflow in any rooms prone to dampness.
