Hidden Warning Signs Our Cleaners Are Trained to Spot in Aged Care and NDIS Homes

When most people think about cleaning, they picture tidy surfaces, fresh-smelling rooms, and a job well done.

But in aged care and NDIS homes, a good clean is about so much more than presentation.

At Sistability, our domestic care specialists are trained to look beyond the obvious. For many of our clients, we’re one of the only regular visitors in the home. That puts us in a unique position, not just to clean, but to notice subtle changes that could indicate something isn’t quite right.

These are the hidden warning signs our team is trained to look out for.

1. Changes in Routine or Behaviour

One of the first things we notice is when something feels different.

This might look like:

  • A client not answering the door as quickly as they usually do

  • Forgetting conversations from a previous visit

  • Leaving tasks unfinished, like laundry sitting in the machine

For older Australians, this can be an early sign of fatigue, illness, or cognitive changes. For NDIS clients, it may reflect shifts in mental health, energy levels, or daily capacity.

They’re small changes, but they matter.

2. Food Being Left or Going to Waste

The kitchen often tells a story.

Our team might notice:

  • Unopened ready meals piling up in the fridge

  • Milk or fresh food repeatedly going off

  • Groceries staying untouched from one visit to the next

This can indicate someone is struggling to prepare meals, has lost their appetite, or isn’t feeling well.

For both aged care and NDIS clients, this can be a key sign that additional support may be needed.

3. Increased Safety Risks Around the Home

Because we move through the home regularly, we often spot subtle changes in how someone is using their space.

This might include:

  • Furniture being repositioned to help with balance

  • Items placed within closer reach of beds or chairs

  • Clutter building up in walkways or high-use areas

These changes can signal reduced mobility or an increased risk of falls—especially for older clients, but also for NDIS participants experiencing changes in physical ability.

4. Changes in the Condition of the Home

A person’s environment can reflect how they’re coping day to day.

We might notice:

  • Bedding not being changed as regularly as usual

  • Laundry starting to pile up

  • Bathrooms becoming harder to maintain

These aren’t signs of neglect—they’re often signs that someone is overwhelmed, unwell, or simply needs more support.

Our role is to step in with care, not judgement.

5. Medication or Health Clues

While we’re not medical professionals, there are subtle indicators we’re trained to be aware of.

For example:

  • Medication left in organisers from previous days

  • New medications appearing without explanation

  • Increased use of mobility aids or medical equipment

These changes can point to evolving health needs or shifts in a client’s condition, especially for those living alone.

6. Signs of Social Isolation

Not all warning signs are physical.

Sometimes, it’s what we hear (or don’t hear) that matters most.

This might look like:

  • A client mentioning they haven’t seen anyone all week

  • The TV being left on constantly for background noise

  • Expressing anxiety about being alone, especially overnight

For many of our clients, our visit might be one of the few moments of connection in their week.

That’s why we take the time to check in, have a chat, and make sure people feel seen, not just supported.

Why These Signs Matter

At Sistability, we see cleaning as just one part of the service.

Our team acts as the “eyes and ears on the ground,” helping to identify early warning signs that something may have changed in a client’s health, safety, or wellbeing.

This is especially important for:

  • Families who can’t always be there in person

  • Support coordinators managing multiple clients

  • Older Australians and NDIS participants living independently

By noticing the small things early, we can help prevent bigger issues later.

More Than Just Cleaning

Not every cleaning service is trained to notice these signs, but we are.

Our team understands the unique needs of aged care and NDIS clients, and we approach every home with empathy, respect, and attention to detail.

Because sometimes, the most important part of our job…
is what others might miss.
